down under 08 - melbourne

After 23 hours of travel from Salt Lake City, we arrived in Melbourne to the warm sunshine of the Australian Summer. Melbourne is famous for its trams (street cars), and we took advantage of the free "City Circle" tram to get around the city taking in the various sights including the city shops, parliament house (State government of Victoria) and a walk along the banks of the Yarra River. We also took a stroll through Federation Square and the National Gallery of Victoria, where we spent 1/2 hour looking at a great display of aboriginal art and the works of some famous early Australian landscape and portrait painters.

We then headed out of the city on another tram to the "beachside" suburb of St Kilda on the shores of Port Phillip Bay where we enjoyed lunch right on the boardwalk at the Stokehouse Restaurant as we watched the people, dogs and boats go by.

Melbourne is also well known for its many parks and gardens. This park in the city had a spectacular jacaranda tree in full bloom.

We were also amused to find this "convenient" public restroom right on the street near the tram stop. Of course Mark just had to try it out!

On Saturday evening we caught another tram to Port Melbourne to catch up with Heather's former work colleague and friend Jan and her partner Terry.
